Lochlea 7 Year Old: Seven Casks, One

 Seriously Creamy Single Malt

There’s something properly satisfying about a whisky that doesn’t try to do too much - it just shows you what great spirit + great casks can do with time.

Lochlea 7 Year Old is a limited-edition release and the distillery’s third (and oldest) age statement to date. It’s been matured exclusively in seven hand-selected first-fill Bourbon casks filled in 2018, stored in traditional dunnage warehouses, then bottled at a bold 50% ABV.

No chill filtration. No colour added. No distractions.
Just a bright, creamy, fruit-forward dram with a proper grown-up depth.

What makes this Lochlea 7 Year Old special?

Most “new” releases lean on finishes, wine casks, or big flavour tricks. This one takes a different route: simplicity, done well.

  • Only first-fill Bourbon casks (seven of them)

  • Seven years of patient maturation

  • Dunnage warehouse storage for steady, traditional ageing

  • 50% ABV for flavour and texture

  • Non-chill filtered + natural colour so it keeps its oils, body, and character

It’s the kind of release that feels like a milestone: Lochlea showing confidence in its spirit and letting the whisky speak for itself.

The flavour profile: creamy, fruity, pastry-rich

If you love whiskies with a creamy mouthfeel, orchard fruit, and that buttery, dessert-adjacent vibe (without being sugary), this is right in your lane.

Lochlea 7 Year Old Tasting Notes

Nose: Beautifully creamy, “fatty” texture, fruity stewed apples.
Palate: So rich and creamy - tropical fruit, a touch of apple, gentle oak.
Finish: Buttery pastry, cereal notes, buttery spice, and tart green apple slices.

It’s got that brilliant balance where it feels indulgent, but still stays fresh and bright.

How to drink it (and get the best from the 50% ABV)

This one is built for flavour, so you can steer it depending on your mood:

  • Neat: you’ll get the full creamy weight and pastry notes.

  • A few drops of water: lifts the tropical fruit and sharpens the green apple snap.

  • Over one big cube: rounds the edges and turns it into an easy, slow sipper.

Tip: give it 5–10 minutes in the glass. The creamy notes open up beautifully with a bit of air.

What to pair it with

Because it’s creamy and fruit-led, it pairs amazingly with foods that echo those notes:

  • Shortbread or buttery biscuits (pastry + vanilla = instant harmony)

  • Apple tart / tarte tatin vibes (hello stewed apples + spice)

  • Mild hard cheeses (think creamy, nutty styles rather than blue)

  • Salted caramel or milk chocolate for a soft, dessert-like pairing

Final thoughts: a confident, no-nonsense milestone

Lochlea 7 Year Old is exactly what you want from an age-statement limited release: bigger texture, deeper flavour, still bright and fruity, and bottled in a way that respects the whisky.

Seven casks. Seven years. Natural presentation.
And a dram that tastes like Lochlea has properly hit its stride.
