Akashi Japanese Single Malt Whisky, 50cl. Akashi is the official whisky from the Japanese White Oak distillery. As suggested by the name, the distillery is located in the small city of Akashi, south of the main island and a few miles away from Kobe, and was the first Japanese distillery to be granted a proper whisky distillation license, back in 1919. Whisky distillation takes place once a year over a four-month period from April to July. A new distillery using Scottish methods was built in 1984 and double distillation takes place in traditional copper pot stills.

This is a none aged single malt whisky which has been made using lightly peated barley. It is then aged in a mixture of three different casks.

Nose: Weak fruit, malt, spice, vanilla, dried apricots and a candy sweetness. It comes across young and flat, but at least there’s no off notes.

Palate: Spice, malt, watery toffee, fruit and a touch of an herbal character. I don’t know if this is just young or uses a lot of barrels that are way past their prime, but it comes through light, flat and uninteresting.

Finish: Short fade of spice, malt and sawdust.
