Port Ellen 1979 XOP Black Series
Douglas Laing's XOP (Xtra Old Particular) is the best of the best from the Douglas Laing family vaults. This range of rare aged Single Malt and Single Grain Scotch Whiskies is bottled exactly the way the distiller intended: without colouring or chill-filtration, and at cask strength. This expression, from the extinct but soon to be resurrected Port Ellen distillery , has spent 40 long years maturing in a refill butt. 299 bottles were filled from this cask.
Nose – Like a gently burnt scone initially, followed by the softest peated barley and brown sugar.
Palate – Shows an eclectic mix of fudge spices and chewed leather, more subtle and a saline quality with late coal dust and ash.
Finish – Amplifies all those earlier subtleties with the emphasis on big hitting spices, smoke iodine and phenolic charm.
