Octomore 8 year old | Douglas Laing
The Octomore series is Bruichladdich's creation. It is normally some of the most heavily peated whisky in the world. This is in contrast to their normal range, which is unpeated. They also use 100% Scottish barley in all their whiskies.

The nose opens very gently for an Octomore. Light maritime notes. Sushi seaweed, light honey character, boiled sweets and mackerel. Smoke takes a few mins in the glass to wake up but once it does, a smouldering coal fire greets you.
The palate opens with pure coal fire smoke. Sweetness take a massive back seat. Black pepper starts to dominate, literally feels nippy on the tongue. Maritime backs off slightly, bringing the balance of this whisky into check. Drop of water brings back the sweetness but is more caramel than honey. It also ramps up the smoke.
Finish is Über long. Coal, salt, pepper and a nouget/caramel note. The coal smoke will dominate everything else you will eat/drink that day.
