An absolute rarity in the truest sense, this bottling offers an uncommon glimpse of an often overlooked but inexorably significant aspect of Scotch Whisky production. The lesser-known counterpart to Single Malt whisky [drawn, of course, from but a single distillery, distilled in copper pot stills using only malted barley] Single Grain whiskies offer a similar outcome but via a quite different production method; and with a similarly different intended final usage. There are far fewer Grain than malt distilleries in Scotland-distilling predominantly wheat in place of barley; as a sweeter and less expensive commodity in a very different, continuous distillation process and on a much grander and arguably industrial scale than a malt distillery. The names of these distilleries would rarely be recognised; the bulk of their product and their primordial raison d’être being solely to provide a sweet and abundant ingredient for use in blending to provide a mellow and sweet texture to the weaving process which binds the flavours of multiple malts in a blended whisky.
With the majority of Single Grain whiskies being employed solely in the manufacture of blends, it is equally uncommon to encounter a Single Grain at all; much less at the superior age of this North British 21 Year Old expression; the bulk of Grain whiskies being blended at 3-12 years old. Founded by a consortium of blenders in the late Nineteenth Century; as the worldwide demand for blended Scotch Whisky grew; North British Distillery, situated in the Scottish Capital, is exemplary of the uncommon compromise between a rich complexity and mild, smooth sweetness of flavour unique to the Single Grain.
The nose and palate coalesce a vanilla and honey viscosity which widens to reveal a lively, full-bodied character, replete with toasted almonds, burnt sugar, butter biscuit and a lingering exotic fruit quality on the finish.
Drawn from but a single cask, this bottling is extremely limited and the spirit within is offered with neither chill-filtration nor artificial colouring and retains its natural, undiluted alcohol content; preserving all of the subtle nuances which led to its exclusive selection.
