The third release in Glenmorangie's Private Edition range, the Artein-translating from Gaelic as 'Stone'- celebrates the distiller's close connection to stone in it's history and production techniques: paying homage to the Cadboll Stone, an ancient Celtic relic situated near the distillery which lends it's image as Glenmorangie's emblem and so too to the limestone which filters the distillery's Tarlogie spring water, used in the Glenmorangie's distillation.
With further regard to the influence of stone on the Glenmorangie's composition, the Artein is matured for 15 years in a combination of ex-Bourbon barrels with an extended period of finishing in Super Tuscan casks formerly charged with maturing the rich and full-bodied wines of the rugged Tuscan region; the grapes of which must often be grown in the acrid, stone-shrewn grounds of the locale.
This combination-casking lends the Artein a fragrant and complex character; the nose offering gentle, floral notes of demerara sugar, caramel and lemon juice. The palate indulges further with a vanilla cream and burnt sugar texture which gently reveals a unique, berry sweetness; unravelling to a moist, fruit-cake texture which softens to a light and punctuated herbal note with a hue of fresh mint on the very finish.
